Environmentally Friendly Farming

Inle Lake, Myanmar

Background

Inle Lake community was established in the 16th century when tribal people were driven from their land and forced to build homes and floating gardens on the lake. In the centuries since, the lake has been polluted by the use of chemical fertilizers and human and animal waste. It was time to address the environmental degradation of this beautiful habitat and aggressively begin decreasing the amount of chemical and human pollution in the lake. Improvements were possible through a specific program that encouraged the Intha people to establish environmentally friendly methods of gardening.

Description

Combating pollution and increasing the livability of the lake was central to this program to ensure healthy futures for the Intha people on the lake. The program trained farmers in environmentally friendly practices that reduce the dependence on chemical pesticides and give back to the earth.

Milestones

  • Trained 25 farmers in vermicomposting technology including breeding of worms for sustainability.
  • Integrated vermicomposting into 100 floating garden plots on Inle Lake.

Impact

  • Directly benefitted 25 farmers on Inle Lake.
  • Indirectly benefitted the families of the farmers and those in the community who purchase crops from these farmers.
